I even saw reports of people being arrested for holding up blank paper with nothing written on it, all being shunted off under police guidance. How outrageous! Right? Well, unless you live in Texas, Florida, or Idaho. Is it any wonder that there are far right radical pundits who are actually voicing approval of authoritarian regimes from Russia to Hungary?

The Thought Police Waging a Culture War

I looked up the meaning of culture wars because I didn’t understand the phrase all that well. Wikipedia told me that “A culture war is a cultural conflict between social groups and the struggle for dominance of their values, beliefs, and practices. It commonly refers to topics on which there is general societal disagreement and polarization in societal values.¹” With that explanation, I figured I could probably find some examples of why such a phenomenon is illogical. At least it is illogical if you accept the constitution as a guiding principle to living life.

Recently I’ve been hearing the word theocracy bandied about. I’ve also recently developed a strong aversion to kool-aid. Wasn’t it a theocracy that Jim Jones wanted to have down there in the jungle? Is it really necessary for all of us to check to see if he knew what he was talking about?

I think I’d like to tell you all a little story. Do you know why I think that the entire MAGA endeavor is doomed for failure? To my way of thinking, the thoughts behind the words that make up the majority of the MAGA creed are fascist. I get that fascism is a word that gets bandied about a lot and it has lost a lot of the horror that it once generated, but the facts of what it is and what it means are still very much present with us.
